iP1201 and iP1202: Single/Dual Output Full Function 2-Phase DC-DC Converter Synchronous Buck Power Blocks
|
International Rectifier’s new iPOWIR™ iP1201 and iP1202 are the first dual output, two phase DC-DC synchronous power blocks available in one easy to use package. These new power blocks allow the systems designer to use a single device to supply two independent voltage rails, simplifying power supply design and shrinking space significantly versus equivalent circuits using discrete components.
The iP1201 and iP1202 are fully optimized solutions for medium current synchronous buck applications requiring up to 15A dual or 30A single outputs with interleaved input. The new iPOWIR devices feature built-in, full function PWM control and protection circuits with optimized power semiconductors and associated passives, achieving high power density. Only an output inductor, input and output capacitors per channel and a few external components are required to build a complete synchronous buck power supply.

Eliminates the need to specify, qualify, procure and assemble up to 20 or more critical discrete components.
iPOWIR technology creates a power “building block” in which all layout and performance-critical items are integrated into one high-density, pre-designed and pre-tested sub system. The circuit designer gets highly predictable, highly efficient and completely guaranteed performance not previously possible with embedded discrete designs. Both the iP1201 and iP1202 are extremely flexible allowing a wide input and output voltage range. The iP1201 covers input bus voltages from 3V to 5.5V and the iP1202 covers from 5.5V to 13.2V, with outputs going down as low as 0.8V and as high as 5V at full current.
iP1201/iP1202 Simplified Internal Schematics

Replaces up to 20 or more discrete components at 1/2 the size
The new devices provide over-voltage and over-temperature protection, while independent soft start for each output enables various power sequencing and tracking options. In addition, a single control pin on the
new iP1201 and iP1202 enable an over-current hiccup or over current latch function. The hiccup function is good for high reliability systems that require a high percentage of up-time. As soon as the short-circuit is
removed, the output voltage is recovered thus eliminating the need for the overall power to the system to be recycled. The new iP1201 and iP1202 reduces the number of discrete components needed, simplifying the design, reducing time to market, and taking up less board space. It is a standard building block for multiple voltage rails, which can be used in multiple applications, eliminating the need to continuously specify new designs. It allows the designer to use a single device to supply two voltage rails. The device has many features and functions and a large amount of flexibility giving the designer many design choices. Simulation support and reference design kits are available for iP1201/iP1202.
