Non-Isolated DC-DC Converters

Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Converter

Two-Phase Sync Buck Converter

  • Multiple sync buck converters are connected in parallel with interleaved operation.
  • Interleaving (phase shifting) increases output current handling capability while reducing input and output current ripple at the same time.

Advantages of Multiphasing with Interleaving
  • Smaller input & output filters can be used since ripple currents cancel.
  • Faster transient response due to multiple smaller inductors in parallel.
  • Switching frequency effectively multiplied by the number of phases.
  • Load current effectively divided by the number of phases.
  • Even heat distribution.
  • Smaller footprint or lower profile due to smaller inductors and capacitors.
