CHiL MultiPhase Technology

Technology Overview

Semiconductor circuits such as microprocessors are operating at ever increasing clock frequencies and are shrinking in size with considerably higher performance. They operate at lower voltages but demand increasingly higher current at higher power. At the same time, the cost of energy, translating into the cost of ownership, has grown significantly and is anticipated to continue to grow.

The industry demand for technology, when supplying core CPU and MEMORY power in the computing segment, is for very fast transient response, extremely high efficiency and battery life (in notebooks) as well as improved reliability, communication and cost structure.

International Rectifier has combined high performance analog sensing with unique digital power techniques, to deliver exactly what the industry is demanding. CHiL’s multi-phase IC power solutions include

  • Very high performance in an open architecture, where our customers can tailor each system for the cost & performance goals required
  • Complete digital state machine content, where information is processed quickly and securely, without requiring code. Information from the power management subsystem is readily available for system integrators to optimize their solutions
  • Patented efficiency techniques that deliver extremely accurate and fast efficiency improvements at all operating conditions of the system, saving power and energy.
  • Non-linear transient response which reliably delivers extremely fast current transients, saving the requirement for excessive capacitors on board.
  • Significant board-space and BOM reduction, integrating many analog features into the digital core of the product.

International Rectifier's approach to delivering high performance, cost effective solutions into the demanding computer market includes a four-prong approach, including:

System Level Solutions

  • Optimize for efficiency across the entire load range (Energy Star)
  • Excellent transient response for high performance Intel VR.xx processors
  • Extensive monitoring and control (digital implementations, gather information, use unique algorithms)
  • Reduced component count on system level BOMs

IC Architecture

  • Flexible architecture
  • Scales easily – number of phases, regulated voltages, interfaces and more
  • Rich digital features to enable our customers

Reduced Cost Structure

  • Use of high volume, market proven 0.25µ and 0.18µ CMOS technology
  • High voltage processes to include performance drivers
  • Fast acting, low gate count digital circuitry

Reduced Development time

  • Fast derivative development with proven analog IP
  • Differentiate in digital for fast product development
  • FPGA validations enable 1st time right silicon and pre-tape out feature validation
