International Rectifier Introduces 'Off-the-Shelf' Radiation-Hardened, High-Reliability DC-DC Converters that Simplify Design and Reduce Cost

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF), introduces the new M3G family of "off-the-shelf" radiation-hardened, high-reliability (hi-rel) DC-DC converters that streamline costly space industry design cycles. The M3G converters are complete single-ended forward buck converter "building blocks" for 28V-, 50V- and 70V-input power buses, in single-, dual- or triple-output configurations. Each module is assembled, tested and documented to reduce or eliminate cycle time needed for analysis and documentation of "in-house" circuit designs.

The small size, low mass and ruggedness makes the M3G converters ideal for geo-stationary and deep space satellites, and communication systems.

"It is difficult to find a fully-qualified and documented, 'off-the-shelf' power conversion solution for space applications. Many system developers in the industry develop their own power system designs, which necessitate circuit development, documentation and analysis. IR's off-the-shelf converters enable in-house circuit designers to use a 'ready-made approach' for power management systems, eliminating costs of development, analysis and documentation," said Tiva Bussarakons, Director of Marketing, HiRel Advanced Analog products.

The M3G family is hardened to withstand total ionizing dose (TID) of 200Krads, with single event effect (SEE) rating of greater than 82 MeV-cm2/mg. The new converters simplify integration since EMI filtering as well as frequency and phase synchronization, are built-in. In addition, the M3G devices are made with hybrid technology, enabling a compact footprint of approximately 2.67 cubic inches (43.75 cm3) at less than 2.82 ounces (80gm) in flight-qualified power systems. International Rectifier currently does not have a DSCC certified Radiation Hardness Assurance Program.

All components are stress de-rated to meet the requirements of MIL-STD-975, MIL-HDBK-1547 and GSFC PPL-21. Completed analysis and documentation include radiation susceptibility, thermal, electrical stress, worst case, failure mode and effect analysis, reliability as well as extensive radiation test data, supporting the design documentation.

      Notes:
    1. MTBF for all devices is 5×106 hours, 35°C case, space flight
    2. Load, main output
    3. Outputs of the dual and triple output devices are capable of providing a higher output current under certain loading combinations. See data sheet for details.

The "xx" in the part number represents input voltage, 28V, 50V or 70V. Output rating remains the same for different input requirements.
