International Rectifier Cuts Power System Cost in High-Volume Desktop Computers

New International Rectifier 20V HEXFET® MOSFETs Cost-Effectively Replace 30V Devices with No Compromise in Performance

EL SEGUNDO, CA. August 2001 - International Rectifier, IR® (NYSE: IRF) announces an extension to its highly successful line of 20V HEXFET® power MOSFETs. The ten new devices are designed for 12V input single and multiphase buck converters for desktop motherboards using next-generation, GHz-class microprocessors such as the Intel® Pentium™4 and the AMD Athlon™.

The new 20V, IRL3714 and IRL3715 MOSFETs are manufactured using IR's rugged stripe planar technology, and are designed to replace more expensive 30V devices. The new devices are more cost-effective than 30V devices and deliver similar or better performance.

20V MOSFET

Carl Blake, Technical Marketing Manager for DC-DC products said, "In high volume desktop applications, CPUs require about 30A, usually delivered with a two-phase synchronous buck converter, capable of 80% efficiency at full load. Achieving this efficiency level at a low cost is a challenge that can be met by replacing 30V MOSFETs in an existing design with IR's new 20V devices."

By optimizing device parameters such as RDS(on), QGD, QG and COSS, IR's new 20V MOSFETs minimize conduction, switching, driver and output losses in 12V input synchronous buck converter applications. Furthermore, the IRL3714 series is designed for optimal performance in the control FET socket while the IRL3715 series is designed for optimal performance in the synchronous FET socket.

"IR's proven avalanche ruggedness provides the high dv/dt capability of IR's new 20V HEXFET MOSFETs that allows them be used in applications where 30V MOSFETs were traditionally used," Blake added.

In desktop computers, the raw AC line input is converted to a 12V DC output using a conventional "silver box" AC-DC converter. The 12V-regulated input is then buck converted down to the voltage required by the CPU using a POL (point-of-load) converter. The synchronous buck converters demand high efficiency power components in order to provide clean DC power to today's power hungry GHz class processors.

The new 20V MOSFETs are an extension of IR's IRL3704 and IRL3711 series and come in a variety of surface mount and through-hole packages offering the designer several options depending on circuit design and layout constraints.
