Lead-Free & RoHS Questions
|
| 1. |
Q. |
What is IR’s definition of RoHS compliant? |
| |
A. |
A RoHS compliant product at IR meets the European Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS) and
the applicable exemptions. Where necessary, IR’s RoHS compliant parts have been qualified to meet the higher
reflow temperature requirements that typical RoHS compliant applications need. Please see IR’s RoHS Certificate
at http://www.irf.com/ehs/rohscert.pdf. |
| 2. |
Q. |
What is RoHS? |
| |
A. |
The EU Directive on RoHS is just part of an ever-increasing push for more
environmentally sound manufacturing policies across the whole of industry. Launching around the same time
in the European Union is the WEEE Directive (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment), which covers
the recyclability of equipment. RoHS sets maximum concentration values (MCVs) for Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg),
Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent Chrome (Cr+6), PBB and PBDE. The RoHS date of compliance is July 1, 2006. Please
see IR’s RoHS Certificate at http://www.irf.com/ehs/rohscert.pdf.
For more details, see IR's EH&S web site. |
| 3. |
Q. |
What are the RoHS exemption(s)? |
| |
A. |
There are a number of exemptions within RoHS. One exemption that typically
applies to IR products is “Lead in high melting type solders (i.e., tin-lead solder alloys containing more
than 85% lead)”. Typically, for IR products, this is applicable to the solder die-attach process. |
| 4. |
Q. |
Are PbF labeled parts also RoHS compliant? |
| |
A. |
A PbF labeled product at IR meets the European Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS) and
the applicable exemptions. |
| 5. |
Q. |
Can an IR part have lead (Pb) greater than the MCV and still be RoHS compliant? |
| |
A. |
Yes. One of the exemptions (Lead in high melting type solders containing more than
85% Pb) allows for lead in the solder die attach process. |
| 6. |
Q. |
Do PbF/RoHS parts comply with J-STD-020C? |
| |
A. |
Yes. |
| 7. |
Q. |
To what reflow process temperatures are RoHS compliant packages qualified? |
| |
A. |
For all SMD (Surface Mount Devices), qualification is at 260°C peak reflow temperature.
Noted exceptions at this time are the PLCC-44/MQFP-64. Go to http://www.irf.com/technical-info/appnotes/an-994.pdf
for details. |
| 8. |
Q. |
Where can I find the International Rectifier reflow profile? |
| |
A. |
The profiles are included the compliance reports for each package. |
| 9. |
Q. |
What is the Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) for RoHS compliant packages? |
| |
A. |
MSL levels for SMD devices are stated in our qual reports. For example, D2PAKs
are MSL-1at 260°C, but the SOIC-8 (HVIC) is MSL-2 at 260°C. For qualification reports go to:
http://www.irf.com/ehs/pbfreequal.html |
| 10. |
Q. |
Are IR’s PbF/RoHS compliant parts backward compatible? |
| |
A. |
A. IR's plastic packages are backwardly compatible when used in typical applications. More details can be found in IR's applications notes. |
| 11. |
Q. |
What is the part numbering for RoHS compliant products? |
| |
A. |
PbF/RoHS Compliant parts will typically have a “PbF” suffix added to the
standard part number. |
| 12. |
Q. |
Is IR certified to the ISO14001 standard? |
| |
A. |
Yes. Go to http://www.irf.com/aboutir-info/manufact.htm
for certifications. |
| 13. |
Q. |
Will International Rectifier continue to provide products that are not RoHS-compliant? |
| |
A. |
Yes, as long as business reasons warrant this. |
